General Information:

Located in La Jolla, the 822 ft hill lies between Interstate 5 to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Mount Soledad Natural Park is located mostly within the community of La Jolla where the northern and eastern form a sharp escarpment along the Rose Canyon Fault. Pacific Beach lies on the more gentle slop of the hill. Mount Soledad is most famous for the large Latin cross that stands east of the summit. There has been crosses on Mount Soledad since 1913. The current cross is 29 feet tall, which was installed and dedicated to Korean War Veterans in 1954. Mount Soledad was transferred to the Federal Government August 14, 2006 as National Veterans Memorial. Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial has six concentric walls that holds 3, 200 granite plaques which are purchased by those who want to hone war veterans. The walls surround the Latin cross which stands in the middle. The memorial is open daily from 7 am to 10 pm.

Interesting Facts:

Three different Christian crosses have been constructed since 1913 on City government property at the apex of Mt. Soledad (Mt. Soledad Natural Park) in the community of La Jolla.

The original wooden cross on Mt. Soledad was erected in 1913 by private citizens living in La Jolla and Pacific Beach, but was stolen in 1923. Later that year it was put back in the ground in Mt. Soledad Natural Park only to be burned down by the Ku Klux Klan.

The second cross was erected in 1934 by a private group of Protestant Christians from La Jolla and Pacific Beach. This cross was blown down by blustery winds in 1952.

The third cross was installed in 1954. It still stands today.

Used by Charles Lindbergh for glider flights in the 1920's

Mount Soledad was a part of the U.S. military early warning defense system in World War II.
