Anzo Borrego Desert, Palm Canyon

General Information:

Located on the eastern side of San Diego County, with portions of the park extending east into Imperial County and north into Riverside County. Anza Borrego Desert State Park is the largest state park in California. The park includes five-hundred miles of dirt roads, 12 wilderness areas, and miles of hiking trails, which provide visitors with an opportunity to experience the Colorado Desert. Anza Borrego Desert is open from dawn until dusk.

Entry to the Park is $6 and camping fees start at $20 per night.

Interesting Facts:

The park is named after Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza and the Spanish word for bighorn sheep, borrego.

The elevation ranges from 6,200 feet to just 150 feet; the land beyond the east edge descends to below sea level, and the temperature range can be just as  extreme, with 120°F days not uncommon - the average July maximum is 110°F - and a 30°F difference possible between the often cloud covered western peaks and the parched deserts far below.
