Balboa Park General Information: Located just minutes from downtown San Diego, Balboa Park is the nations largest urban cultural park. Balboa Park has become a must see San Diego attraction for locals and tourists alike. Balboa Park is home to 15 museums, performing arts venues including the Old Globe Theater, and Spreckels Organ Pavilion, beautiful and romantic gardens, and the world famous San Diego Zoo. The park grounds are open daily, but the specific institutions have various hours of operation. Fees: Admittance to the park grounds is free, but admission prices vary in the institutions. The Botanical building, outdoor gardens and some other attractions are offered free of charge. And every museum offers free admission one Tuesday a month. Interesting Facts: In 1868, civic leaders set aside a 1,400 acre parcel of land overlooking the "New Town" (the current San Diego downtown area), which became known as "City Park." The park remained undeveloped for 20 years. Today the park's total land parcel has been reduced to 1,200 acres. The world famous San Diego Zoo was established in 1916. In 1926, the San Diego Museum of Art was established which is the region's oldest and largest art museum. In 2003, Balboa Park was ranked as one of the Best Parks in the World by the Project for Public Spaces (rank of 13 out of 24 international parks).
