According to 2005 UNAID statistics:

  • 25.8 million people are living with AIDS.

  • 3.4 million (out of 4.9 worldwide) new infected HIV.

  • 2.4 million (out of 3.1 worldwide) AIDS deaths.

  • 25.8 million (out of 40.3 worldwide) people are living with AIDS/HIV.
  • 3.4 million (out of 4.9 worldwide) new infected HIV (69% of global infection)
  • 2.4 million (out of 3.1 worldwide) AIDS deaths

  • More than 12 million children in Africa have lost at least one parent to HIV/AIDS; this total will reach 18 million by 2010

  • Every day in Africa, 6,600 people die and another 8,500 contract the HIV virus - 1,400 of whom are newborn babies infected during childbirth or by their mothers' milk.
