ArcIMS Tutorial/User Guide

The purpose of this program is to assist the student to have an interactive experience and have more retention of topics related to the many facets of world geography.

We will use GIS(Geographic Information System) technology to view and create maps.

Getting Started - Print this page so you can refer to the instructions while interacting with the ArcIMS Map.

Note: Place pointer over tool button to identify its funtion.

The first step is learning to understand the functions of the toolbar.

Toolbar

The toolbar panel contains several tools that control what area of the Region will be displayed in the map area, when you position the arrow on a tool bar icon and then click your left mouse button.

Definitions:

Scale - refers to the area covered on a map. A small scale map 100,000:1 will make the areas have less detail, but cover a larger area (world map).  A large scale map, example 21,000:1 will focus on a smaller area(like the State of California) and provide more detail.

Extent - refers to the amount of geographical area being displayed on the map Active Layer - this refers to the types of information you want highlighted on the map. To see rivers, the River box must be on or selected in your contents legend(located to the left of the map. To not see rivers on the map, simply uncheck the box.

Zoom In (Option 1)

- Click in the Zoom In Button

- Position crosshairs(cursor) at a point on the country of Australia

- Click your left mouse button

Result: The map will be redrawn at half the current scale, centered on thecross hair/cursor position. (note: the change in the scale)

Zoom Out

Click the Zoom Out Button

Position the crosshairs/cursor on the country of Australia

Click your mouse button

Result: The map will be redrawn at twice the current scale centered on the cross hair position.

Zoom to Full Extent

Click the Zoom to Full Extent Button

Result: The map will be redrawn at the original full extent of the Region.

Zoom to Active Layers:

Click the Zoom to Active Layers Button

Result: The map is redrawn to reflect the active layers.

Back to Last Extent (going back to your previous view)

Click the Back to Last Extent Button

Result: The map returns to the last scale the map was in.

Pan: (the icon with a hand)

The pan button allows you to change the map extent while preserving themap scale. (Shift the map around on the page)

Click the Pan Button

Position the crosshairs/cursor at a point on the map. For tutoring purpose, focus on India. Holding the left mouse button down, you can shift the map around the page or depress the arrow button for the direction you want to pan in (Left, Right, Up, Down or North, South, etc).

Result: The map will be repositioned to the new area and redrawn at the previous  map scale.

Identify:

The identify tool allows you to get attribute information about a feature by clicking on it.

- Click a layer in the legend to make it active.

- Click the identify button

- Position the crosshairs/cursor over a single feature on the map

- Click your mouse button

Find:

The Find Tool locates features based on their attribute values.  Only searches on text strings can be performed.

- Click a layer in the legend to make it active. (Click on cities)

Click the find button

Type a city name (Bombay) you want to find in UPPERCASE in the text

box.

Click find string box.

Results: The cities that contain that string of letters you typed in will be listed in the text panel.

Example: You want to find the island you think is name Martinique in the Caribbean. The list will show all lands with this partial name.

Click the "Rec" number for one the features listed in the text box.

Result: The map will be redrawn, centered on the selected feature.

Query:

Click a layer in the legend to make it active

Click the Query button.

Click the field drop down arrow.

Scroll to the field you want to query on and click your mouse button.

Click the Operator drop down button.

Scroll to the operator you want to use and click your mouse button.

Type in the field you want to find in the Value field.

Click the Add Query String button.

Click the Execute button.

Results: The feature will be listed to match your query will be highlighted and  information will be displayed about your query.

Rectangle Icon - selects by rectangle Polygon Icon - Selects by polygon

Clear Selection

Use this tool between successive Select By Line/Polygon operations.

Click Clear Selection

Result: Removes the cities or information from a previous Selection.

Print Icon - prints the page
