The San Diego City Schools Web and Data Map Web site is a group project for Geography 596 at San Diego State University.
Geography 596:Internet Mapping and Distributed GIServices Course Overview
This course introduces current development of Internet mapping and advanced cartographic skills for Web-based maps. By using web-authoring tools (FrontPage XP) and Internet Map servers (ESRI ArcIMS, SmallWorld Internet Application Server, ER Mapper's Image Web Server, and INTERGRAPHs GeoMedia WebMap Server), students can learn both the techniques of Internet mapping and the principles of interactive cartography, including multimedia, animation, and user interface design. The lectures will focus on the theories and principles behind the Internet mapping, including distributed component technologies, graphic designs, and network communications. The lab exercises will focus on the practical applications and web design skills for Internet map servers. Students will learn how to design and set up an Internet Map Server and to publish their web maps on the server.
Group Project Overview
As part of the course, students formed groups of two to three to work on an appropriate project. After much thought and consideration, our group decided on creating a web site that contained school boundary information as well as data and statistics from each school in the San Diego City School District. The purpose was to create an informative resource integrating school locations and their performance. While all of the data contained on this Web site is currently available online, our goal was to create a Web site that is relatively easy to navigate while containing pertinent information in one location.
