Description

  Part of the Pine Valley Wilderness, Horsethief Canyon used to be a historical hideout for stolen horses in the 1800's. The wilderness area is part of the Cleveland National Forest and covers an area of 13,000 acres. One can hike through chaparral, grasses, sage scrub, oak and riparian woodland.  This trailhead is part of the Cleveland National Forest and a Forest Adventure Pass is required.

Facilities

  Japatul Fire Station.

Directions

  Take I-8 towards Alpine, exit Tavern Rd and drive south for 2.7 miles to Japatul Rd. Tavern Rd turns into Japatul Rd.  Drive for 5.8 miles to Lyons Valley Rd. and turn right.  The trailhead is 1.5 miles to to the left.

Trails

   #1 Horsethief Canyon

                Length = 3.2 miles round trip.

                Difficulty = Moderate.

                Highlights = Historic canyon where horse thieves used to stash stolen horses.  In the winter and spring there are is a stream, cascades, and shallow pools.  For those feeling ambitious, the trail meets up with the Secret Canyon Trail, where overnight camping with a permit is allowed. 

Hazards

  Rattlesnakes, poison oak, and ticks.
