San
Diego is a rapidly changing city characterized by impressive population
growth, as well as growth of infrastructure. There are two neighborhoods
in particular that are seeing extensive change through redevelopment.
Public policy on redevelopment is increasingly reliant on knowledge
depicted through cartographic representations.
As
geographers, we understand the power inherent in maps, and we
have decided to examine a popular topic within the academic body
of cartographic literature. The ecological fallacy is the use
of data collected at a larger geographic scale to make assumptions
about a smaller geographic scale. As a group, we decided to examine
the differences between several demographic variables at the scale
of census tracts and the scale of census blockgroups.
This
webpage is intended to be a visual guide to examining possible
differences between data represented at the two aforementioned
scales. Click on the two neighborhoods to learn more.
