The prevalence of obesity, diabetes is increasing in this country, and these and related illnesses have become a major focus for intervention by public health agencies. Numerous studies have shown that regular exercise helps moderate weight, and improves multiple fitness indicators in both adults and children, especially when combined with good dietary habits. When whole families are physically active together, parents can model these behaviors and inspire good fitness habits early in their children's lives. The goal of our FITKid website is to provide information, for both parents and children, about the benefits of regular exercise, and to highlight local opportunities supporting physical activity. We provide maps to family-oriented exercise and recreational facilities, walking, and biking trails throughout San Diego County. We hope families will use our mapping services to find conveniently located places to exercise. FITkid is a resource prepared by students at San Diego State University.
