This website was developed as part of a group assignment in a geography class called "Internet Mapping and Geographic Information Services (GIS)". In other words, how to use maps placed on the Internet to visualize information that has a geographic component. For instance, instead of looking in a book for a list or map of the locations of toxic waste sites, a map placed on the Internet can be accessed and customized to the needs of the user. We chose to illustrate the power of Internet Maps and GIS for an important public health concern; cancer deaths (mortality). Cancer does not affect everyone equally. Some cancers are more common in men than women and some more common in blacks than in whites. In addition, some cancers are more common in the poor. We used income and education level to map poverty and allow you to compare states that are high or low in cancer with that state's average income and level of education. We welcome you to our site and hope you will learn about maps, cancer, and the power of combining the Internet with maps and cancer.
