Energy Efficiency Tips:

4 ways to save money today and support the environment!

1: In the winter, turn your thermostats down to 68 degrees or below.  Reduce the setting to 55 degrees before going to sleep or when leaving for the day. (For each 1degree you turn down the thermostat you'll save up to 5% on your heating costs.

2: Turn off non-essential lights and appliances.  The electricity generated by fossil fuels for a single home puts more carbon dioxide in the air than two average cars!

3: Avoid running large appliances such as washers, dryers, and electric ovens during peak energy demand hours from 5:00a.m. to 9:00a.m. and 4:00p.m. to 7:00p.m.

4: Close shades and blinds at night to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows. This also applies during the day for warm climates.

Water Conservation Tips:

The Toilet:

Avoid unnecessary flushing.  Dispose of tissues, insects and other similar waste in the trash rather than the toilet.  Replace flush handle that sticks.

The Shower/Bath:

Replace your showerhead with ultra low-flow version, saving up to 2.5 gallons per minute.  Take shorter showers! "Navy Shower" Get wet, turn off the water, soap and scrub, then turn the water on to rinse.  Don't let the water run while you are shaving, washing your face, or brushing your teeth.

The Kitchen:

Minimize the use of kitchen sink disposals; they require a lot of water to operate properly.  Start a compost pile as an alternate method of disposing of food waste.

Washing Dishes:

When washing dishes by hand , fill one sink or basin with soapy water.  Quickly rinse under a slow stream of water from the faucet.  Use the dirty water to run your sink disposal if necessary.  Fully load automatic dishwashers; they use the same amount of water no matter how much is in them!  Buy dishwashers with water and energy saving options.
