The research on the software
agents has already promote certain applications trying to facilitate the
personal manipulation of the computer. This page will provide some
applications as well as some sources in the field as to inspire the
further understanding on the design, construction and development of
those software agents.
The application of the software agent falls into the following
categories:
ˇ
Interface
Agent
Operating system agents: agents
executes locally in the operation system and help user to interact with
the operating system through its GUI shell.
IIntelligent
Utility System Agent system agent for Windows 95, a background program that launches
applications according to user-defined schedule, which is time based.
Interface Agent:
in charge of interacting with the user and of making transparent the other
agents to him. (http://www.cilea.it/GARR-NIR/nir-it-95/atti/giannini/giannini/node4.html)
Open Sesame!
Open Sesame! is the software agent observes
user events in their Macintosh applications, learns the repetitive user work patterns via a sequence
clustering algorithm to find the best representative pattern for the
given collection of sequences, and customize itself according to how the
user works with it.

Seasame! A Look at Personal Assistant
Letizia: is a user interface agent that
assists a user browsing the World Wide Web. As the user operates a
conventional Web browser such as Netscape, the agent tracks user behavior
and attempts to anticipate items of interest by doing concurrent,
autonomous exploration of links from the user's current position. The
agent automates a browsing strategy consisting of a best-first search
augmented by heuristics inferring user interest from browsing behavior.

An Agent That Assists Web Browsing
Let's Browse: is an experiment in
building an agent to assist a group of people in browsing, by suggesting
new material likely to be of common interest. It is built as an extension
to the Web browsing agent Letizia. Let's Browse features automatic
detection of the presence of users, automated "channel surfing"
browsing, and dynamic display of the user profiles and explanation of
recommendations.

A Collaborative Web Browsing Agent
E-mail Agent: allows for the automatic forwarding,
storage, and deletion of electronic mails, freeing the user from the
necessity of coping with electronic junk mail. (Denning 1982)
Beyond Mail: a rule based agent for managing e-mail. The rule is When a
specific event happens, if it meets certain conditions, then take the
action. The difference between Beyond Mail and Open Sesame! Is user needs
to define the messaging rules using a rule editor.
Meeting Scheduling Agent: acted as personal assistant
who can negotiate a meeting in line with the preferences of its owners.
KautzBot and SelmanBot: developed at AT&T Bell Labs, communicated
with other agents via email and attempted to automatically negotiate an
acceptable meeting time for all involoved participatens.

Web Search Agent: traverse the Web hyperspace on
behalf of users to provide services.
Web Compass, is a personalized parallel search query
agent. The agent software comes with an initial source list of search
engines that are modified by the user to reflect personal interests.
Web Crawler
DejaNews: Research Service for
Usenet news.
City Net: search services for
geographic directories.
Harvest: a scalable
architecture for indexing the Web based on a model that promotes
cooperation.
Smartseach: an
intelligent and efficient agent that carries out net-searches by
simultaneously consulting the most important search engines of the
Internet which are grouped under categories website.
BullsEye: a search and
retrieval agent that allows you to search multiple search engines (450+)
through a single interface. BullEye integrates many of the tasks power
searchers use under one intuitive interface and combines targeted
meta-searching with full text analysis (via the Verity 97 toolkit), and
filtering, for more relevant results. Works behind a firewall. Windows
only. By Intelliseek.
Excite: Infoseek's desktop
meta-search engine including pre-defined search categories but not
filtering. User customizable and co-brandable. Anticipatory download of
graphics. Windows only. By Infoseek.
Information Filtering Agents
NewsHound: automatically searches articles and ads matching a
user's profiles, and emails its findings. Users can adjust a Selectivity
parameter to guide NewsHound to send more or fewer stories on a given
topic. It is developed from San Jose Mercury News
